This original etching and aquatint in colours with carborundum is hand signed in pencil by the artist''Miró'' at the lower right margin. It is also hand numbered in pencil at the lower left margin. The work is part of a series of 13 engravings titled "Barcelona" and created in 1972-73. It was printed by J.J. Torralba, Barcelona, in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered impressions plus ten Hors Commerce [out of trade] proofs numbered in Roman numerals. The series was published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. The paper bears the watermark of the publisher at the bottom right corner and the stamp of the same, verso. Literature: Dupin, J. (1989). Joan Miro

Joan Miro was an extremely influential painter, sculptor and ceramicist. He was born in Barcelona in April 1893. Barcelona has plenty of cultural heritage as it stands, but Miro is perhaps one of it’s most famous sons. Extremely popular during his lifetime, his work has been seen by many critics and appreciative patrons as surrealist. Miro was rather controversial in his approach to art, and he believed that conventional painting was wrong. He is famous for saying that he wanted to declare an ‘assassination of painting’, to get rid of conventional painting methods. He was originally involved in the business world as a clerk, but left that for art. Apparently, he suffered a nervous breakdown as a clerk. His early art was incredibly influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Cezanne. Miro later settled in Paris and focused on creating some of his most important work. In 1924, he joined the surrealist group. Later he turned to more representational and conventional painting, with classics such as the Dutch Interiors in 1928.During the Spanish Civil War Miro could not go home. He settled in France, and then finally found his home in Majorca, which is where he died in 1983.
